The aviation industry faces a growing workforce gap. As experienced technicians retire, demand is rising—while the pipeline of new talent struggles to keep up.
A major issue is awareness. Many potential students never consider aviation as a career, limiting the talent pool before training even begins.
Cotulla Education has long supported workforce development through programs like the Aviation Institute of Maintenance, but recognized that classroom training alone isn’t enough.
To expand access and spark earlier interest, Cotulla partnered with Big Human to launch Aviation.edu: a digital learning platform designed to introduce aviation careers and support students throughout their journey.
Rather than replacing traditional education, Aviation.edu complements it: helping students discover aviation, build knowledge, and navigate the path to certification.
Overview
Aviation.edu was built as a digital learning platform supporting the full aviation career journey from early discovery to professional training. Big Human partnered with Cotulla to define the platform’s strategy, brand, content structure, and technical foundation. The goal was to create a scalable resource that helps users explore aviation, build foundational knowledge, and move toward certification. The result is an accessible, engaging platform that introduces new career paths while supporting learners as they progress.
Our role included: - Research & Strategy - Branding & Design - Content & SEO/GEO - Platform Development
Research & Strategy
We began by studying how aviation students learn—and how people discover aviation as a career. Key insight: many potential candidates never encounter aviation at all. For those who do, learning resources are often fragmented outside the classroom. We also identified core learning behaviors through interviews with current students:
Students prefer hands-on and visual learning over dense text
Supplemental study tools are essential for FAA prep
Existing tools are often outdated or difficult to use
Peer-driven learning plays a major role
These insights shaped a core strategy: build a platform that supports both discovery and structured learning. Aviation.edu was designed as a resource center supporting users across key stages:
Career discovery
Foundational knowledge
FAA exam preparation
This foundation guided the platform’s design, content model, and roadmap.
Branding & Design
Aviation.edu needed to feel credible within the industry while remaining approachable for new learners. Big Human developed a visual system that balances technical authority with clarity.
The design emphasizes:
Clean layouts that simplify complex topics
Clear typography and hierarchy
Visual cues that guide learning pathways
The result is a platform that feels both professional and accessible: helping users explore aviation with confidence.
Content &SEO/AEO
Content is the foundation of Aviation.edu. Big Human developed an initial library of educational articles and resources designed to both introduce aviation careers and support students in training. Content focused on:
Career pathways and industry context
FAA certification and exam prep
Aircraft systems and core concepts
Industry insights and guidance
Each piece was built for both clarity and discoverability using SEO/AEO best practices: keyword-driven topics, structured headers and metadata, internal linking, and optimized page structure. This approach allows Aviation.edu to capture search demand from users exploring aviation while providing meaningful learning resources for students already in training.
Over time, this foundation will expand into micro-learning modules, test prep tools, and multimedia experiences.
Development
Aviation.edu was built on a custom WordPress framework, allowing it to scale while remaining easy for Cotulla to manage.
The platform supports multiple content types:
Articles and resources
Multimedia modules
Interactive tools
WordPress enables seamless integration with Cotulla’s ecosystem while allowing rapid content and feature expansion. The result is a flexible architecture designed for ongoing growth.
